Couple escape pothole nightmare on US Route 23 near Ann Arbor

ANN ARBOR, Mich – It’s not hard to imagine as we’ve all had a rock chip in our car at some point and it can be scary.

Now imagine the rock shattering your windshield at 75 miles per hour.

“It was big. We were shocked when it happened,” said Coleen Gleason.

Gleason talks about the rock that hit her windshield just after noon last Saturday near Ann Arbor.

She was driving south on U.S. Route 23 with her boyfriend in their Chevy Silverado, just past the Plymouth Road exit, when a Pure Michigan moment occurred.

“And then the car in front of us changed lanes and hit a pothole, and then this massive, rock-like chunk spun off their rear tire and came and slammed into the windshield,” Gleason said.

They were able to get to the curb safely, but when you see the damage in the video player above you might be wondering how.

“Well, yeah, it left a four-inch gap in the windshield,” Gleason said. “So there was plenty where I could stick fingers through the windshield if I wanted to. So there was broken glass all over the cab of the truck. How it got into our eyes and our hair. Like it went into our drinks that we had in the console and then we still have to vacuum out the back seat of the truck and there’s still broken glass back there.”

They found a Safelite near Ann Arbor and had the windshield fixed quickly, but their deductible was too high to make a claim.

So Gleason filed a lawsuit with the state of Michigan, but she’s not holding her breath.

“I’m just thinking, what if something worse happened? Then who would have been held accountable?” said Gleason. “So I’m just grateful that he and I were okay. And there are no other injured vehicles.”

And that’s the important part that everyone is fine, but Gleason worries people will dismiss this as “well, that’s Michigan” if that had been an inexperienced driver, who knows what the result would have been.
