Community leaders say the retired Lansing Green police chief will leave a lasting legacy

LANSING, Michigan (WILX) – Daryl Green has worked hard to protect the Lansing community for over two decades. His time as police chief is drawing to a close, but his legacy will continue.

Lansing Mayor Andy Schor said: “He has been a leader in our work for racial justice, he has been a national leader, he is FBI certified, he has delivered training in the city of Lansing on racial sensitivity.”

And he did all of that as a boss while trying to navigate Lansing City through a pandemic.

“He was able to change things so that our community service was carried out in a different way,” said Schor. “He was able to change things to make sure we were proactive in policing but to try to protect his officers.”

And at the same time there was a time of race riot, protests and riots over the murder of George Floyd. The local NAACP chapter believes Chief Green has shown trust and transparency.

Dale Copedge is President of the Lansing NAACP.

“I really enjoyed his community involvement, especially young people,” said Copedge. “He has tried to inform them or put them in a position where they can be safe to take away the fear of young men, black men and women who are held up.”

Chief Green has also helped improve a southwest neighborhood of Lansing and its businesses. After a few break-ins, he wanted to secure the area additionally.

A member of the Lansing Southwest Action Group, Revan Herfy, said, “They put a live camera in the parking lot. We wanted to create a safe atmosphere. So if I want to bring my kids or a mom who wants to walk around the sidewalk and feel safe; We had to have the support of the police. And we’ve definitely received that from Chief Green in recent years. “

The legacy he left in all areas of the community will not be forgotten.

Schor said, “Being the chief of police in Lansing City is not an easy job and he did it perfectly.”

Lansing Police Captain Ellery Sosebee will serve as interim chief until the mayor appoints a replacement.

The last two chiefs were captains in the department. Sosebee is among three, the others are Captain Katherine Diehl and Captain Rodney Anderson.
