Community Health and Social Services Center in Detroit secures mammogram machine

DETROIT – A community center in southwest Detroit said it could double the number of women who can be screened for breast cancer thanks to a grant from the Empowerment Foundation.

The Community Health and Social Services Center (CHASS) can now lease a mammography device for at least a year with a grant of $ 80,000.

“We are very grateful for the generous support of the Empowerment Foundation in helping us bring this life-saving equipment to the center,” said Dr. Felix Valbuena Jr., CEO CHASS Center. “This gift will enable us to offer our patients immediate screening for breast cancer – early screening enables earlier detection and treatment, which ultimately saves lives.”

CHASS has been in the community for 50 years, providing a variety of services to the mostly Spanish-speaking community nearby.

Currently, CHASS is partnering with the Henry Ford Health System so that women can get mammograms there, but Valbuena said the ability to offer the service in the community so they don’t have to navigate a large hospital, parking lot, and language barriers makes a lot more likely that screening will take place.

The grant pays the one-year lease and the staff required to carry out the mammography screening. CHASS expects the first mammogram in October, the month of breast cancer awareness.

The Empowerment Foundation funds projects “that focus on education, health, self-reliance and technology to support disadvantaged communities”.

“Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women in our country, so access to a mammogram is vital,” said Bonnie Hill, spokeswoman for the Empowerment Foundation. “It is a privilege to be able to assist the CHASS Center in bringing this life-saving device into its center while continuing to provide high quality care in the Southwest Detroit community.”

CHASS is now starting a fundraising campaign to keep the mammography device beyond the one-year lease. Any money donated between now and the end of 2021 will be topped up by the Empowerment Foundation with up to $ 40,000.
