The Business of Controlled Fire
For decades, the timber industry and state agencies treated fire as an enemy. Suppression policies left Michigan's woods choked with underbrush, deadfall, and disease—fuel that turns routine dry spells into catastrophic blazes. That legacy is now a business problem. Loggers, foresters, and a growing cadre of burn contractors are finding that a well-timed, low-intensity burn is cheaper than the alternative: lost timber value, ruined stands, and the cascading costs of a wildfire nobody planned for.
The economics are quietly shifting. Prescribed burning improves regeneration of species like jack pine and oak, which need heat to release seeds or clear competing growth. For landowners and timber operators, that means healthier stands, better yields, and fewer pest outbreaks. It also means a new service industry—specialists who plan, permit, and execute burns, carrying insurance and liability that once made the practice unthinkable.
The real analysis is about risk reallocation. A century of suppression transferred risk from the forest to the future; controlled burns move it back to the present, where it can be managed, scheduled, and priced. Public perception lags—smoke alarms and 911 calls are a marketing problem—but the math is unforgiving. Michigan's forests were built to burn. The businesses that learn to burn them deliberately will be the ones still standing when the next dry summer arrives.
