Briarwood Mall recognized for sustainability efforts

ANN ARBOR, MI – Briarwood Mall is one of a group of properties recognized as sustainable by the Institute of Real Estate Management.

The mall, owned by Simon Properties, is one of eight properties that have received IREM Certified Sustainable Property Certification.

To gain certification, properties must conduct a baseline check before completing various sustainability improvement initiatives. These initiatives include tasks such as conducting a waste stream audit, reducing water consumption by 5%, and installing energy efficient lighting in parking lots.

The certification reflects the company’s “continued commitment to managing efficient, green real estate,” said Steve Fivel, general counsel and secretary of Simon Properties.

“Sustainability isn’t just about good design – it’s about the asset performance that comes from good quality property management and we pride ourselves on embodying that on a daily basis,” Fivel said in a statement.

Other Simon Properties companies in the US that are also earning certification include Barton Creek Square, Great Mall, Mall of Georgia, Tampa Premium Outlets, The Forum Shop at Caesars Palace, Wrentham Village Premium Outlets, and Grove City Premium Outlets.

More information on the certification process can be found here on the IREM website.
