ADRIAN — Bohmey Beauty is a clean, green and nontoxic lifestyle retailer offering products made by eco-friendly and sustainable brands.
It is locally owned and located at 128 N. Main St. in downtown Adrian. Owner Angeline Pratt just opened the first low-waste refillery and sustainable shop in Lenawee County.
Pratt started selling products in 2019 and opened the shop in January of 2020 just before COVID hit and opened a store in Ann Arbor that same year. The shop is doing so well that Pratt just recently opened another store in Traverse City.
“We have a little bit of everything. That’s why we say ‘lifestyle boutique’ because we have sustainable athletic leisure workout clothes, we have cream makeup and skin care, we have products like lotions, scrubs and things like that,” Pratt said. “We do clean beauty, lifestyle and all of that, and then in our Adrian store only we have a new zero-waste refillery station.”
The layout of the three stores is basically the same, Pratt said.
“All three stores are basically the same, a little bit curated differently, but overall it’s like clothing, beauty, makeup, skin care, lifestyle, candles, gifts, but Adrian is the one that has the zero-waste refillery where you can just bring your own container or you can buy one from us and you can fill it up with anything from body wash to body lotion to glass cleaner to dish soap and that is a good way to just reduce your waste,” Pratt said. “You save money if you just bring your own containers because the product itself is pretty affordable. So if you bring your own container, it makes it sustainable and it is a little more frugal way to help the environment.”
Still, the refillery is only about a month or two old and it is just slowly catching on with shoppers. All of the products are made in Michigan, which bodes well for customers who like to shop local, Pratt said.
“I’ll be honest, it’s been a little bit slow. I think a lot of people are still new to the idea of a refillery. I think that people, once they learn more about it, how it’s clean, how it benefits the environment and their wallet, then they’re more intrigued and interested and are willing to give it a try,” Pratt said. “We do have a lot of customers that once they’ve tried it, they’re repeat purchasing and coming back to refill because all of our products in our refillery are also made in Michigan. So people like to support local and especially when the products are made locally.”
