12 killed in Guatemalan village plagued by land disputes | Nation/World News
GUATEMALA CITY (AP) – A dozen people were murdered Saturday in a Guatemalan village embroiled in a year-long territorial dispute with a nearby city, police said.
The National Civil Police said the twelve dead were men, women and children, but did not provide details about the incidents in the Chiquix village in western Guatemala near the Mexican border.
A local police officer was killed and violence has already occurred in the same area earlier this week.
Chiquix residents have argued with residents of the town of Santa Catarina Ixtahuacan over water and land access. The negotiations between the two sides have so far produced few results.
