11-year-old boy, father among 3 shot on Detroit’s west side

An 11-year-old boy and his father were shot dead in the west of the city on Sunday morning. A third person inside was also injured after a suspect opened fire with an assault weapon while driving in a truck.

The boy was shot in the chest and is being hospitalized in stable condition, and his father is in a temporarily serious condition, having been hit in the leg. The condition of the third victim and his relationship to the other two is currently unclear.

Detroit police say the shooting occurred just before 8 a.m. in the Plymouth Road and St. Marys Street area near the Southfield Freeway. A black Chrysler 300 passed a pickup truck that carried four people including the victims.

At this point a suspect got out and fired Cmdr, according to DPD. Arnold Williams.

“We have a problem with people being violent for no reason,” said Cmdr. said Williams. “Right now people should be celebrating Father’s Day and what we have is a father and a child with gunshot wounds in the hospital. We have a gun violence problem in the city, it’s just ridiculous.”

Williams said the police have video of the incident but are asking anyone with information to call them or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.

It is the third child in about three days to be shot dead in the city. Two children were shot dead on I-75 late Thursday evening, including 2-year-old Brison Christian.
